Recruiting for Nepal Trip October 2010
| Starting in Kathmandu, our teams will travel to different villages to work for 9 days. WCE is now recruiting 7 volunteers over age 21 to visit Nepal for two weeks starting the 8th of October, 2010. Volunteer teams will assist with training, upgrading, networking, and trouble-shooting in schools that have received computers from WCE. |
The team has been invited to help on a project developed by COPPADES, our lead Partner organisation in Nepal. COPPADES is led by Dikendra Kandel who has had substantial experience with university students visiting Nepal. Over the past 5 years, WCE has shipped 1,600 used computers to COPPADES. WCE is also planning the next shipment of a 5th 20-foot container of 225 computer sets in a few months.
Volunteers (minimum age is 21) are sought with skills in technology, communication, use of technology in education, and environment (to help our eWaste Initiative while they are in Nepal).
About 2% of the people in Nepal use the Internet and the average annual income is about $1,200 per person. We hope that this team will help with training and model how to use them to improve learning using the Internet.
The orientation in Kathmandu will include tourism and some lectures on issues about Nepal as well as some instruction on basic Nepali words. The volunteers will stay together for the first few days of orientation in Kathmandu and then split into 3 teams to each travel with a COPPADES staff person to different villages to work for 9 days. While there, the small teams will stay together with their guide in guest houses.
We hope that all participants will find ways in their own countries to learn some Nepali words before October. We will also send team members some educational web links to visit to prior to the trip. Team members are also encouraged to bring replacment parts with them for Pentium 1s and 2s including mother boards and RAM, and power supplies. It is always good on a trip of this length to bring some of your favorite food as well as small gifts for those who help you or work with you.
If you are interested in going, please contact Nepal@WorldComputerExchange.org
A copy of our eCorps Application is attached in Word.
Many prior eCorps volunteers have found their 2-week trip to be life-changing and excellent. Read about eCorps Nigeria. Read the evaluation and comments of our eCorps Tanzania 2009 team. Read the evaluation and comments of our eCorps Kenya 2009 team. Our prior eCorps volunteers would love to share stories of their adventure with you!
Our other eCorps trips in 2010 will be to: El Salvador from the 14th to the 29th of May. Senegal from the 9th to the 24th of July, and Tanzania from the 6th to the 20th of August.
Team members will make a tax deductible donation to WCE for $1,350 plus the cost of your flights. If you have date requirements in October, please let us know. We can provide you with a fund raising letter and links to help you find Sponsors to help you with the costs of your trip. WCE is also looking for Sponsors to help reduce their costs. We need a minimum of five volunteers to go forward.
