eCorps Nicaragua 2012

Interested in putting your technology skills to work to help schools in Nicaragua? We are now recruiting a team of 5-7 “eCorps” volunteers to travel to Nicaragua. The team will arrive in Managua for two weeks on March 30th and 31st.
Team information
The focus of this team is to troubleshoot lab networks in schools and to "train the trainers" with an emphasis on encouraging teachers to participate in internet-based learning projects. Volunteers for this trip need to be at least 21 years of age.
Volunteers need one or more of the following skills: using the Internet in education, network troubleshooting, computer repair, training, website development, appropriate recycling of electronic waste, or Linux LTSP thin-client lab installation. It will be helpful if volunteers are able to speak Spanish.
Some of the eCorps Nicaragua team will be from the Centers of New Horizons Computer Learning Centers.
Sites
The following WCE Partners will receive a shipment of 200 Pentium 4 and Pentium 5 desktops from WCE Chicago. The computers are preloaded with Spanish versions of Ubuntu operating system and Libre/Office and educational materials. The computers leave Chicago on the 13th of December and arrive in Managua in January. This shipment is financially Sponsored by New Horizons Computer Learning Centers. Each group will install their computers prior to the eCorps Nicaragua team arriving.

What to expect
The trip will begin with two days of rest, site-seeing and orientation at New Horizons Computer Learning Center of Nicaragua. After orientation, the group will meet with representatives of interested groups and then visit schools that have recently received computers from World Computer Exchange. On one or two of the days in the second week, the team will provide basic teacher and tech training at New Horizons.
Itinerary
- Friday: Travel from your country to Managua
- Saturday: Arrival and rest and informal dinner with other team members in Managua
- Sunday: Orientation at New Horizons and informal site seeing in Managua
- Monday: Travel to first work site
- Tuesday: Meeting with interested groups
- Wednesday to Friday: work at schools and other sites
- Saturday and Sunday: informal site seeing
- Monday: work at schools and other sites
- Tuesday and Wednesday: teacher and tech training at New Horizons
- Thursday and Friday: final work at schools and other sites
- Friday: farewell dinner
- Saturday: Return travel to your country

To reserve this trip, team members need to complete our eCorps application, make a tax deductible donation to WCE of $500 to cover our administrative costs.

Estimated Costs: $2,100.
- Round trip airfare between Boston (sample city) and Managua is approximately $500 - $900. Check on airfare from your country - WCE can help you with finding low cost fares.
- WCE Coordination: $500 ($250 if you live in Latin America)
- Visa: $65 (you may need to get this from an Embassy of Nicaragua prior to your departure)
- Travel / Medical Evacuation Insurance: $100
- Immunizations: $75 (if you need them)
- Site-seeing : $200
- Transportation to your work sites: $100
- Lodging and Breakfast/Dinner you pay on site for 14 nights: $40 x 14 = $560

To help you with the costs of your trip, we can provide you with a fund raising letter and tax-deductible receipts for donors from the USA or Canada.
If you prefer, all of your costs can be covered through a donation to WCE. This is tax-deductible in Canada and the USA.
WCE will provide you with a tax receipt for the above costs.
