Greatest Need - Pakistan
In March 2012, WCE will ship our third container to Karachi, Pakistan. World Computer Exchange has previously shipped 400 computers to connect 6,400 youth in 32 schools in Pakistan.
This container will be shipped from WCE Boston and will hold 200 refurbished Pentium 4 and above computers and monitors for 15 schools with 7,000 students in several areas of Pakistan.
A couple in the USA has generously Sponsored 1/3 of the sourcing and shipping costs for these 200 computers so that each school will pay $63 per delivered computer preloaded with software along with a monitor. Additional funds were also raised to help with costs for an evaluator in Pakistan to visit the recipient schools and complete our evaluation form, take digital pictures and write a story for our eNews.
This shipment is part of our Computers for Girls initiative. Recipient schools will ensure that girls will also have access to the skills, opportunities and understanding made possible by access to the internet.
The volunteers of WCE Boston are refurbishing the computers and loading software so that the shipment will be ready for shipment in March 2012.
WCE has arranged with iEARN-Pakistan to provide 30 teachers from the 15 schools with teacher training in computer use, the use of the operating system and the educational use of the internet through multi-country online experiential learning projects.
WCE has strong ties with New Horizons Computer Learning Centers that has a franchise in Pakistan that we are asking for help with training for the recipients.
Pakistan is the second country to join WCE’s Computers for Girls initiative. Our first shipment as part of the initiative was to Zimbabwe and the third will be to Liberia. We are beginning planning and fundraising for Philippines to be the fourth country and Kenya to the fifth.
We are now in the process of recruiting among the 73 groups in Pakistan that WCE has heard interest from over the years.
