For nearly 25 years, Peter H. Hellmonds has been helping shape the vision of World Computer Exchange (WCE), combining his expertise in international business, development, and technology to expand educational opportunities around the globe.
Peter’s career has taken him from studying international affairs at Georgetown University and Princeton University to pioneering digital development initiatives at the World Bank, where he championed internet access and information sharing long before they became global priorities.
His connection with WCE began in 2001 through a project in Vietnam under the World Economic Forum’s Global Digital Divide Initiative. Rather than viewing computer donations as the end goal, Peter helped reimagine the project into a comprehensive education model pairing schools with universities for teacher training, technical support, and long-term sustainability. That philosophy continues to influence his work today.
After joining WCE’s Board of Directors in 2010, Peter brought strategic leadership during some of the organization’s most challenging years. As Board Chair from 2017 to 2022, he focused on strengthening WCE’s financial sustainability, introducing long-term planning tools that helped the organization navigate the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, he continues supporting WCE as a member of the International Advisory Council.
Peter started the initiative for WCE to expand beyond simply donating computers. He advocated for partnerships that allowed businesses to responsibly recycle technology while supporting education, creating a model that advanced both environmental sustainability and digital inclusion.
For Peter, digital access means far more than providing computers or internet connections. In today’s world, he believes true digital inclusion also requires teaching people how to evaluate information critically and navigate an increasingly AI-driven online landscape. “Access must mean more than simply giving people a computer,” he explains, it must also include the knowledge to use technology responsibly and effectively.
Looking ahead, Peter hopes WCE will continue growing into an even more resilient global network powered by its volunteers, chapters, partners, and field associates. He believes the organization’s greatest strength lies in its collaborative approach and its ability to create lasting educational impact in communities around the world.
As WCE continues its mission to bridge the digital divide, Peter’s decades of dedication serve as a reminder that lasting change is built not only through technology but through partnerships, innovation, and a shared commitment to expanding opportunity for future generations.
