In Solwezi, Zambia, 17-year-old Grace Kahilu is gaining new opportunities through World Computer Exchange’s Inspire Girls Coding Bootcamp. Before joining the program, Grace had limited exposure to technology and faced barriers that made it difficult to explore digital tools or continue learning independently. Today, she is building skills, confidence, and a new vision for her future.
We spoke with Grace about her experience in the program:
What was your experience with technology before joining Inspire Girls?
“Before joining the program, my experience with technology was quite limited. I did not have many opportunities to explore or use digital tools, and I was not very familiar with how technology could be used for learning and personal growth.”
What challenges did you face?
“One of the main challenges I faced was not having access to a personal device such as a phone or computer. This made it difficult to connect to the internet, practice digital skills, or explore more learning opportunities on my own.”

What skills have you learned through the program?
“Through the program, I have developed problem-solving skills and gained basic computer
skills. I have also become more informed about the changing world of technology and how it can be used in different areas of life.”
What has been your favorite part of the program?
“My favorite part of the program has been interacting with others and learning from people who are more experienced than me. It has been inspiring to share ideas and gain new knowledge.”
How has this experience changed your goals or daily life?
“This experience has inspired me to create my own work and continue learning more about technology. I have seen how technology can help me complete different tasks and learn things instantly. Even when a teacher is not available, I can still find information and understand topics by doing my own research using available devices. This has helped me stay up to date with my studies and become more independent in my learning.”
What does having access to technology mean to you?
“Having access to technology means change to me. It is a chance to learn on a global level and connect with people around the world, just like this program has allowed me to do. It is also an opportunity to build my future, especially in a world where technology is becoming important in almost every career. Access to technology is helping to change my mindset and improve how I study and learn.”
“To me, having access to technology means I am no longer left behind. It gives me the same tools as students in big cities and makes me feel like I can achieve any goal I set for my future.”
Grace’s story reflects the powerful impact of access to technology. Through Inspire Girls, she is not only gaining skills but also the confidence and independence to shape her own path.
