In Franklin, Massachusetts, one student turned a passion for technology into a movement. After volunteering with World Computer Exchange, he discovered a love for repairing laptops and saw the impact technology could have on students around the world. “After a few sessions, I was hooked,” he shared. “I wanted others in my community to experience the same excitement.”
With guidance from WCE President Pam and incredible support from his mother, Jaya, who helped organize logistics and secured a donation of over 200 laptops from her company the idea for a Franklin chapter became reality.
The first event began with a bit of nervous anticipation, but soon transformed into a lively workshop as the young 13 year olds eagerly refurbished 20-40 laptops. “I worried they might lose interest,” he said, “but they picked it up fast, some finished three or four computers each!”
The refurbished laptops will soon be sent to students in the global south, helping children gain access to technology and digital learning tools. “Something many of us take for granted can truly change lives,” he reflected.
Seeing the enthusiasm of the participants, he’s already planning the next event. “My goal is to get more kids involved, not just for volunteer hours, but because they’re genuinely interested in learning and giving back.”
The Franklin chapter is just getting started, but its impact is already clear: a community coming together to learn, connect, and make a global difference.
